The hard stop, and why closing an account is not it

Three acts that look similar and are not

Deleting an app removes a shortcut, not an account. Closing an account ends a commercial relationship, and in many cases it can be reversed on request, sometimes the same day. Self-exclusion is a commitment made under the licence: the account stays shut for the agreed period, marketing should stop, and once it takes effect it normally cannot be lifted early even at the player's own request. That irreversibility is the feature. It is a decision made by a person who is thinking clearly, enforced against the same person on a worse day.

What to expect from the process

Lengths are set by the operator or by the jurisdiction. In licensed markets a minimum duration of several months is common, with longer options available, and some schemes run to years. In most cases the block is offered through the account settings; where it must be requested, ask for it in writing and keep the date. Marketing should stop, though messages already scheduled or sent by a third party can occasionally cross the boundary, and that is worth reporting if it happens.

Two practical cautions. First, the block is usually held by that operator alone, so it does not by itself stop play somewhere else. Second, an unresolved balance can complicate the exit: it is usually settled through the operator's withdrawal process, and a block does not mean the money is forfeited. Read the terms before you start so that neither of those comes as a surprise.

Registers, and the wider net

Some jurisdictions operate a national self-exclusion register that covers many licensed operators at once. Registration is normally free, it can sometimes be requested directly rather than through a single operator, and it extends the block beyond one brand in a way no individual account can. Where such a scheme exists, it is usually described by the regulator rather than by the operators themselves, which makes the regulator's site the better place to look.

Outside those schemes, the only controls that do not depend on the operator at all are the ones on your own side of the connection: blocks at device or network level, blocks placed with your bank or card issuer, and the plain act of removing stored payment details. None of them are as clean as a register, and all of them work without anyone's cooperation.
